UP power dept engineers protest against Apna Dal MP in Mirzapur

Mirzapur : Engineers and employees of the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) were up on their arms and were holding protest against the assault of an engineer by the husband of local Apna Dal MP Anupriya Patel on Saturday. The engineers today boycotted their work between 1000 to 1200 hrs and staged dharna at the Fataha office demanding action against the Mirzapur MP. They also threatened to intensify their agitation if no action was taken against the erring politician. However, police has lodged an FIR against Ms Patel’s husband Ashish Patel and his supporters for allegedly misbehaving, assaulting and illegally detaining power department officials at her office in the Katra area on Saturday evening. The reports here today said the incident occurred when the MP summoned department officials to her public relation office to discuss poor power supply and problems villagers are facing due to burnt transformers not being replaced in Dadree -- the adarsh village adopted by Ms Patel in Mirzapur. While the meeting was on, hearing reports that the officials have been illegally detained, department employees arrived and gheraoed Ms Patel’s office. They also cut power supply to Mirzapur. The situation was brought under control when senior district and police officials arrived at the spot and assured action against the guilty. The FIR was lodged following a police complaint filed by department executive engineer V K Gupta, under whose jurisdiction falls Dadree. "Gupta alleged that Ashish Patel and the MP’s supporters abused and misbehaved with him. He also claimed that they tore official documents," the complaint said. The MP refused the charges and said on Saturday, the pradhan of Dadree village complained to her that while transformers in his village had burnt around three months ago, the power department was yet to replace them. Some locals also complained of poor power supply, alleging that department employees were demanding money to replace the burnt transformers. She said, "A meeting was called and the chief engineer of the department, A K Rai, came to attend it. When the MP told Rai about the complaints, he said that superintendent engineer A K Singh would be able to respond to the allegations. Rai was then asked to call Singh for the meeting." "However, as Rai failed to contact A K Singh, the MP called up the district magistrate and told him about the matter. A few minutes later, Singh arrived at the MP’s office with V K Gupta. But Gupta was asked to leave as there were allegations against him," he added. On being asked to leave, Gupta called up his associates and soon, several employees of the power department arrived and gheroed the MP’s office. Ms Patel, meanwhile, claimed, "The issue is being politicised under the influence of local Samajwadi Party leaders . I was only trying to resolve a problem faced by the people."
