Lucknow: Polling commenced in a smooth manner in 49 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh in the sixth phase today at 0700 hrs amid tight security arrangements. The polling started at 0700 and will continue till 1700 hrs in these 49 seats spread out in seven districts of Poorvanchal on the Indo-Nepal and North Bihar borders. The seats in this phase are in extremely backward eastern UP. The sixth phase would witness around 1.72 crores electorate, including 76.06 lakhs women, who are expected to exercise their franchise in 17,926 polling booths in which 2146 booths were identified as hyper sensitive. There are 635 candidates including 63 women in the fray for the sixth phase of polling of which 20 per cent have criminal background and 25 per cent are crorepatis. In morning hours, though there was enthusiasm seen among voters but in some booths of Gorakhpur and Azamgarh, voters queued before the start of the polling. State Chief Electoral Officer(CEO) T Vekentesh told UNI here today that polling started smoothly in all the booths amid witnessing of some teething problems in some booths due to malfunctioning of the EVMs. He said elaborate security have been made and adequate numbers of Central forces have been deployed. Around 2 lakh security personnel, including more than 700 companies of Central forces have been deployed in this phase of polling. Security has been made stringent in Mau, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Deoria and Maharajganj districts due to candidature of several criminal background candidates. According to the EC, in the sixth phase, to ensure free and fair elections, 667 digital cameras, 1081 video cameras and webcasting would be done from 1781 booths.
