UP panchayat polls counting underway

Lucknow, Dec 13 - The counting for the world's largest panchayat election in Uttar Pradesh was underway after most of the results were declared live amid tight security cover today.

The counting of votes in 74 districts of the state started at 7:00 am and was still underway till 7:00 pm.

According to the live statistics available on the website of Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission, 49,240 out of 58,909 results were declared for 819 blocks where 189 candidates won unopposed while 3,31,969 out of 7,42,269 Gram Panchayat Wards were declared in which 3,01,928 won unopposed.

With over 11 crore voters eligible to cast their votes, approximately 72 per cent voters have exercised their franchise.

The entire counting process was being videographed while drone cameras were also used for security purpose over the counting centres in some districts.

During the four phase polls, around 10 people were killed and over 100 injured during clashes while the Election Commission had suspended six officials, including DM and SP of Pratapgarh.

Security has been tightened in the state due to the counting of votes of the pradhan polls with 20 district given additional forces. The state has also kept the 40 company central forces in reserve till December 14, which had been sent by the Centre for the panchayat polls.

The Commission had already held the elections of the block and district panchayat elections earlier in October which was by and large peaceful. While on the other hand, many interesting events were also reported during the Pradhan polls.

In a village where the pradhan seat was fixed for a female candidate, a pradhan aspirant got married within just four hours. His wife then contested the elections and even campaigned for herself minutes after their marriage.

Similarly, the sale of luxury cars were also on a rise in the Mirzapur district since the poll dates were fixed. Moreover, demand for fancy number plates rose.
