Lucknow, Dec 5 - About 75 per cent of the electorate have exercised their franchise today amidst minor incidents of violence for the third phase polling for the Pradhan and village Panchayat members in Uttar Pradesh.
Barring seven districts of Lucknow, Unnao, Sitapur, Hardoi, Lakhimpur Kheri, Rae Bareli and Gonda, polling were held in the remaining districts of the state. Polling in these seven districts would be held on December 7.
The campaigning in these 181 blocks in 67 districts came to an end on Thursday evening, even as more than three lakh security personnel, including 40 companies of central forces, were deployed for the polling.
State Election Commissioner S K Agarwal told reporters that 75 per cent voting was witnessed today and the decision of re-polling was taken at two centres of Pratapgarh, besides a police constable and a station in charge were suspended over an allegation of beating a man to death.
Minor incidents of violence and spat between the supporters of the contestants were also reported at Mainpuri Dehat, Kaushambi, Kannauj and Bahraich districts, Mr Agarwal said.
As many as 1,08,226 candidates are in the contest for 13,182 posts of Pradhan in 181 blocks of 67 districts in the state today, while for the total posts of 1,85,784 village Panchayat members, there are only 1,42,483 candidates. Thousand of contestants for the village Panchayat members were elected unopposed as the number of posts are more than the candidates in fray.
