baterry-rickshaw-by-akhilesh-yadavLucknow, Aug 18- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in an effort to ameliorate the social condition of rickshaw pullers in the state distributed free e-rickshaws to 100 rickshaw pullers here today. The SP government in its 2012 election manifesto had promised to provide free e-rickshaws to around 3 lakh rickshaw pullers of the state. “In the initial phase 27,000 rickshaw pullers from across the state who have registered themselves with the Nagar Nigam will be given these e-rickshaws for free”, informed the CM. The total cost of the project will be Rs 320 crore. The CM said that this new concept will revolutionize the urban transport system as there is demand for these type of public transport services. He also requested the Pune based company who has been given the contract for making these e-rickshaws to provide them at the lowest possible prices so that more of such e-rickshaws can be bought by the government at lower prices thus benefiting the poor rickshaw of the state. The scheme will be later expanded to encompass the unregistered rickshaw pullers as well informed Mohammad Azam Khan, Urban Development Minister who was also present at the occasion. Throwing light on the various schemes of the state government, the CM said the SP government has fulfilled all its promises and aims at creating balance in the society by empowering all sections of the society. He said on the lines of the 108 ambulance service which promises an ambulance at your door steps in 15 minutes soon the same kind of response will also be seen by the denizens when calling the police. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav who was also present at the occasion while congratulating the Urban Development Ministry under whose aegis the programme is being executed said, “Ours is the only nation where people still pull other people for transport and today Lohia’s dream of ending this unjust and demeaning practice has been finally realized.” "The SP government has worked for all sections of the society including women, students, farmers, poor, minorities and the down trodden," he added.
