UP Congress protests against beheading of Rajiv Gandhi

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Congress today held demonstrations throughout the state protesting against the destruction of the statue of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Rajiv Gandhi in Mirzapur. The incident took place on Saturday night. The statue, installed at a park at Awas Vikas colony in Mirzapur, was found beheaded by Congress supporters on Sunday morning. Later, the head of the statue was recovered from a drain nearby. UP Congress president Raj Babbar and Rajya Sabha member Pramod Tiwari are already in Mirzapur. In Lucknow, the party leaders and workers burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Later, they, led by Rajya Sabha member PL Punia, marched to the Raj Bhavan, where they raised slogans against the Governments of Modi and Yogi alleging that they were behind the beheading of the statue. Some youth Congress members also blocked the rail tracks near Badshah Nagar Railway Station to lodge their protest. Meanwhile, Raj Babbar along with other senior leaders held a dharna at the place of the incident in Mirzapur today. They have given an ultimatum to the state Government to arrest the culprits immediately. Police has registered an FIR in this case. No arrest has been made in the case so far.
