UP CM launches Van Mahotsav

PRESS  1Lucknow, Jul 1 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today inaugurated the Van Mahotsav by planting a Parijaat sapling at the Kukrail picnic spot here. The Chief Minister while addressing the gathering said the Samajwadi Party was committed to the conserving of the Enviornment and the Forest Department has set a huge target of planting ten crore saplings in two years. A total of 21 saplings were planted to create a Parijaat Upvan at the picnic spot. The occasion also saw warm greetings from the Ministers and forest officials on the 42nd birthday of the Chief Minister. Minister of State for Forest Mehfooz Kidwai extended his well wishes with the words “Tum Jiyo Haazaron Saal, Saal Ke Din Hon Pacchas Hazar” while the Minister of the Zoological Gardens Shiv Pratap Yadav extended greetings and also lauded the Chief Minister for choosing the Parijaat tree for planting for its religious and cultural values. The Chief Minister while speaking on the occasion of Van Mahotsav said it was under the Samajwadi Government that the green cover had increased in the state, "It is under the Samajwadi Party government that the green cover has increased in Uttar Pradesh which shows that the Forest Department has meted out its responsibility well", he said, Mr Yadav said Parijaat has been chosen because it signifies religious and literary heritage, “It is a myth the Parijaat is available only in a few places. I remember that when plantations were carried out at the Lohia Park there was only one sapling of Parijaat which was procured with much difficulty. Our forest department nurseries are equipped well to provide saplings of various species” he pointed out. Referring to the 2500 acres Park which the Government was coming up at the NOIDA, the Chief Minister said it will be largest Park after the one at Paris. The Chief Minister said the Samajwadi Party had changed the face of every Zoo in the state. "We have made all the Zoological Gardens better in the state and procured new toy trains for them. The Lohia Parks when photographed looks like a park from abroad", he pointed out. Minister of the Zoological Gardens Shiv Pratap Yadav said their Government had planted over 15 crore saplings in three years and established 1500 green belts. Minister For State for Forest Mehfooz Kidwai said the people from Bihar, Central Government, Uttrakhand, Nepal had come to Uttar Pradesh to study the forestation plan which has resulted in the increase in the greenery. Principal Secretary Forest Sanjeev Saran while giving the highlights of this year's plantation said they had set a target of 10 crores for 2 years with five crores for each year. “In six districts saplings will be planted in an area of 1000 acres which included Jhansi, Lalitpur, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Chitrakoot, Sonebhadra and Mirzapur. On 418 spots, plantation will be carried on a 50 acre area to create the green belt” he said. The Principal Secretary said on the occasion of Van Mahotsav from July 1 to July 7 a total of 1 crore saplings will be planted on 1248 spots. "This target will be met by carrying out a campaign across the entire state with the help of Ministers, Non Governmental Organizations through mass programmes", he said. The timeline for forestation is that in the month of July and August two crore saplings will be planted and in the month of September one crore sapling will be planted. He said the saplings will be planted in keeping with the soil conditions and the environment of the local area. Giving the name of the species which will be planted he said they would include Sheesham, Neem, Amaltas, Gulmohar, Cyrus, Kadam, Chitwan, Tamarind, Bel, Mahua, Mango and Bargad. Saran said tha the aim was to plant saplings which were of cultural and heritage value. Giving the details of the saplings which have been planted in the previous years, he said 1525 saplings have been planted for the past three years. From 2012-2013, 490.8 lakh saplings were planted, in 2013-14 a total of 600.2 saplings were planted and from 2014-2015 435.6 saplings were planted. In the previous plantations in a bid to develop green belts 59.61 lakh saplings were planted on 8832 hectares. Under the total forest cover in the year 2014-2015 the project was carried in six districts which include Lucknow, Unnao, Kannauj, Mainpuri, Etawah and Badaun.
