'Udta Punjab' grounded by Censor board over 'excessive swearing'

New Delhi : The much-awaited and talked about movie of director Abhishek Chaubey 'Udta Punjab' has been stopped by the censor board. The movie, based on the subject of Punjab's drug menace, was reportedly not granted an all-clear because of "excessive swearing". Producer of the film Anurag Kashyap, who is familiar with censorship troubles, unwilling to run the risk of cuts being suggested by the Revising Committee or the Tribunal, decided to skip them altogether and approach the I&B minister instead. The movie's trailer had drawn more than 1. 1 crore hits on YouTube two weeks ago. The Central Board of film Certification (CBFC's) decision comes a week after Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had expressed reservations over the portrayal of Punjabis in the film, which deals with the drug abuse and is scheduled for release on June 17, seven months ahead of the 2017 assembly polls. The film stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanj and is produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Phantom Productions.
