New Delhi : Riding on the controversy surrounding it, a topical theme of drug abuse and the performances by its main cast, ‘Udta Punjab’ has earned Rs 48. 5 crore in its opening week, entering the list of top five grossers in the opening week this year, trade sources said. The film, which had collections of over Rs 30 crore in its opening weekend, has earned higher collections in its opening week than films like ‘Kapooor and sons’ and ‘Neerja’. While ‘Kapoor and Sons’ has collections of Rs 46. 93 crore in its opening week, ‘Neerja’ had collections of Rs 35. 32 crore in its opening week. With opening week’s collections of Rs 48. 5 crore, the flick is among the top five earners in the opening week this year, after 'Airlift', ' House full 3', 'Fan' and 'Baaghi'.
Dealing with the issue of the drug abuse in Punjab, ‘Udta Punjab’ ran into controversy with the censor board ordering several cuts in the film, which was challenged by the filmmakers in the Bombay High court and eventually the court ordered the release of the film with just one cut. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey and produced by Ekta Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motvane, the film, which stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor and Daljit Dosanj in key roles, has got a lot of critical acclaim.
