Three rape accused in fray in fifth phase UP polls

Lucknow: The fifth phase polling to be held tomorrow in 51 assembly seats of eastern Uttar Pradesh is different from the four earlier phases, as this time there are three candidates in the fray who are accused of rape and sexual exploitation. Of the three candidates, two are from the ruling Samajwadi Party, including an influential minister, and a founder and president of Peace Party. UP police yesterday lodged here an FIR against Dr Mohammed Ayub, president of the Peace Party. The FIR was lodged for allegedly raping a 22-year-old nursing student and later killing her by giving wrong medicines. Dr Ayub owns a number of hospitals in Gorakhpur and other east UP districts is MLA from Khalilabad assembly seat in Sant Kabir Nagar district. He is seeking re-election from the same seat. The family of the girl has accused Dr Ayub of raping her multiple times for the past several years while she was studying in a nursing college of Lucknow. On the direction of the Supreme Court on February 17, UP police lodged FIR on charges of gang rape and under POCSO Act against Gayatri Prasad Prajapati, Transport minister and SP candidate from Amethi assembly seat, a segment of Amethi Lok Sabha seat represented by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. UP police has said there were sufficient grounds for the arrest of the minister. He has neither been arrested nor dismissed from the cabinet by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who is also the national president of the party. Mr Arun Verma, Samajwadi Party candidate from Sultanpur assembly seat is also facing rape charges. The woman who had filed rape complaint against the MLA were recently murdered. The father of the woman in his complaint to the police has accused the MLA for the murder of his daughter. Mr Akhilesh Yadav has termed the murder a `conspiracy’ against the MLA. Mr Akhilesh Yadav had kicked off his election campaign on January 24 from Sultanpur seat claiming that launching the electioneering from the seat will bring him success.
