Varanasi :  After a stampede claimed 25 lives, another controversy rocked the 'Jai Guru Dev' congregation which ended here yesterday, when 24 stray animals were found dead after consuming the leftovers of the 'bhandara' of the four-day religious meet. Official sources here today said that the stray animals, including dogs and buffaloes, consumed the leftovers of the meet and 24 of them died. However, no official was ready to speak on record and only said that they are investigating the matter. But eye-witnesses claimed that the animals started dying after they consumed the leftovers after the congregation ended yesterday morning. The religious meet which started on October 15, was attended by one lakh devotees. However, on Saturday, a major stampede took place during the religious procession in which 25 people were killed on the Rajghat Ganga bridge. Meanwhile, taking a lesson from the religions meet, the Varanasi authorities have declined permission for a similar congregation of another disciple of Jai Guru Dev from October 23. The disciple of Jai Guru devi, Umakant Maharaj had sought permission from the Varanasi authorities for a religious meet or Satsang from October 23 but the district officials have denied it. Umakant Maharaj, at first was adamant in holding the programme as per schedule even after denial of the permission but later announced that they will hold the meet next month. The Varanasi police has registered an FIR against five people in connection with the Saturday's stampede which including the suspended ADM(city) and three of the organisers.
