Shoe hurled at Rahul Gandhi misses target, youth was arrested

Sitapur : The Deoria to Delhi Kisan yatra of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi today, on start of the second leg of the journey met with a protest after a youth hurled a shoe at the leader, when he was on a road show in the city. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) O P Singh told UNI here today that a person, who allegedly threw the shoe has been taken in custody by the security forces. Mr Gandhi, riding in an open top vehicle, was seen looking at the shoe thrown in his direction and then looking away after the object missed him. The detained person has been identified as Hariom Mishra, a native of Hargaon. Two of his accomplice identified as Ashish Nishad and Anuj Saxena were absconding after the incident. Talking to the media, detained Hariom, claiming himself as a local TV news journalist, said that he had protested as the ongoing Kisan yatra of the Congress leader was just a drama as the party had always ignored the farmers during its long governance at the Centre. The assailant, refusing to claim himself as guilty, alleged that Mr Gandhi had no time to express his condolence for the martyr and the previous UPA government too had never cared to counter the terrorism in the country. "If I was not arrested, then, I would have thrown a second shoe at him," he stated. The accused has been kept at Kotwali police station and an FIR was being lodged against him. Sources said that thousands of people have thronged the city to welcome the Congress leader, but the incident did not stop the road show of Mr Gandhi. Mr Gandhi commenced his second leg of Kisan yatra from the Lucknow-Sitapur border this morning.
