SC seeks response from EC on PIL seeking Gujarat Assembly elections through VVPAT machines

New Delhi:  The Supreme Court today sought a detailed response from the Election Commission on a PIL seeking conduct of the forthcoming Gujarat Assembly elections through Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines. A Division Bench, headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and comprising Justice DY Chandrachud, sought the reply from the poll watchdog. The Commission has to file an affidavit within four weeks on how much VVPAT machines they have. Appearing for the petitioner, senior Supreme Court counsel Kapil Sibal today submitted before the court that to conduct the Gujarat Assembly elections through VVPAT, 71,000 odd machines were required. Responding to Mr Sibal, Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for the Centre told the apex court that Union of India has already provided Rs 3,500-crore to the EC for procuring VVPAT machines.
