SC quashes criminal case against Captain Cool

New Delhi :  The Supreme Court today quashed a criminal case against cricketer MS Dhoni for allegedly hurting religious sentiments by portraying himself as Lord Vishnu on the cover of a business magazine. Providing relief to Dhoni, a bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, said that the procedure contemplated for initiating the criminal case was not complied with. In a case filed against Dhoni in a Bengaluru trial court, social activist Jayakumar Hiremath had alleged that by depicting himself as Lord Vishnu, the cricketer had hurt the sentiments of the people. The magazine, on its cover page in 2013, had depicted Dhoni as Lord Vishnu, holding several consumer products in his hands, including a shoe. A court in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, had issued a non-bailable warrant against Dhoni for allegedly denigrating a Hindu god. Dhoni had then approached the Supreme Court.
