Pro and anti-Gorkhaland rallies mark Sunday in North Bengal

Darjeeling/Siliguri:  Pro and anti-Gorkhaland rallies marked the holiday today in this strategic region of North Bengal, even as the GJM, sponsoring the indefinite strike in Darjeeling Hills since June 12, announced a 12-hour relaxation tomorrow for vehicular traffic in view of Muslim festival Eid. As the rallies and slogans for statehood for the Indian Gorkhas in Darjeeling reverberated in the eastern Himalayan terrains, a human procession in Siliguri also broke the silence of this commercial town of North Bengal, which usually remain calm on holiday. " We want peace, We won't fight. We won't allow to divide Bengal, and Darjeeling will always remain in Bengal, " as women holding banners with these slogans paraded this commercial town. The rally was led by the girls and women in Siliguri, as it has bee seen in the Hills too where women led the rallies under the watchful eyes of the Army and para-military forces. There had been no report of any untoward incident in the Hills for the third day today as rallies are allowed to march despite promulgation of Section 144 Cr Pc in some sensitive areas, including near DM office in Darjeeling.
