One of 2 cubs delivered by Etawah Lion Safari lioness die

lionEtawah, UP, Jul 20- One of the cubs delivered by an Etawah lion safari Asiatic lioness, died here yesterday. Etawah lion safari officials today said the lioness, 'Heer', delivered two cubs on Saturday noon, but unfortunately one of the cubs died yesterday. However, they claim that the one of the remaining cub was healthy but was yet to open its eyes. Zoo doctors, Utkarsh Shukla from Lucknow and R K Singh from Kanpur were monitoring the health of the cub and they are also consulting it with the doctors of Gir Forest in Gujarat. The official said another lioness, Greeshma, who is also expecting is likely to deliver in a couple of days. After the birth of the cub, the first phase of lion breeding centre is almost complete. In April, a team of four doctors from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, had confirmed that the three pairs of Asiatic lions -Manan and Kumari, Kuber and Greeshma, and Heer and Gigo- are living under strict observations of vet and wildlife experts in the Etawah lion safari ever since the mating period in January. UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's ambitious lion safari project in his home district, Etawah, suffered a setback following the death of lion 'Vishnu' and lioness 'Lakshmi', last year. Both died due to cardio respiratory failure caused by multiple organ failure. The birth of a cub is also a push for the dwindling number of Asiatic lions, as only 523 of them are left in the country.
