Manjhi survives attack in Gaya, police open fire to quell mob

Gaya : Police opened fire to quell a violent mob whichattacked the cavalcade of former Chief Minister Jeetan Ram Manjhi and indulged in arson to protest killing of LJP leader Sudesh Paswan and his cousin at Kachar village under Dumaria police station area in the district.' The mob which was demonstrating with bodies of the slain LJP leaderand his cousin attacked the cavalcade of Mr Manjhi and pelted stones on his escort party yesterday.' When demonstrators indulged in large scale violence and arson, police fired in the air after baton charge failed to chase away the mob. Police said here Mr Manjhi`s cavalcade was attacked when he was on way to meet familiy members of slain LJP leader Sudesh Paswan and his cousin Sunil Paswan at their native Kachar village under Dumaria police station.The mob pelted stones on the cavalcade and set on fire a few vehicles in the cavalcade. A few vehicles including three motorbikes were set on fire. Demonstrators also attacked the police party which reached the spot on receipt of information. Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police Garima Mallik while confirmingthe incident said that the situation was tense but under control. Further details were awaited, she added. LJP leader Sudesh Paswan and his cousin were shot dead by unidentified criminals yesterday while he was campaigning for his wife, a candidate for Mukhiya of Kachar Panchayat.
