Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today congratulated Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar for making into the final in the individual vault event at the Rio Olympics. The 22-year-old girl from Agartala, Tripura, gymnast Dipa Karmakar is the first Indian woman to make it into the final in the individual vaultat Rio last night. Dipa Karmakar's epoch making vault on her debut Olympic earned her 8th spot, thus qualified for the final, She managed in 'Produnova' vault to secure 14.
850 points after two attempts.
"Congratulations to Dipa Karmakar for her good performance at Rio Olympics 2016. Best of luck for final. You make us proud," The Bengal chief minister tweetted this morning. The final is on August 14. Meanwhile, Dipa's father Dulal Karmakar, who is also a former athlete, said they were now looking at their daughter to make all Indians proud. "I hope every Indian across the globe is praying for Dipa so that she wins at least a medal on August 14," the day before India's Independence Day,' Mr Karmakar said.
