Lightning and squall kill 11 people in Bengal


Kolkata: Lightning and squall that hit parts of south Bengal briefly during late afternoon on Saturday have killed at least 11 people, six of them in Burdwan district, according an official estimate today. Lightning and fallen trees from squall at a speed of about 75 kmph were the main reasons for the death. However, rain was only 9.8 mm, according to weathermen. Of the casualties, eight people were struck by the lighting, and three died after falling trees on them. Whilst six people died when lightning struck them at different places in Burdwan district, report of three deathscame from Purulia and Hooghly district. However, the squall damaged heavily on the standing crops in the districts of South and North 24 Parganas,Burdwan, Nadia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Hooghly and Howrah, Bankura and Purulia and Medinipur.
