Lankan Navy arrests 6 Indians with 13.5 kg drug parcels


Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, : Sri Lankan Navy today apprehended six Indian nationals for allegedly smuggling 13.5 kg of drugs, suspected to be heroin, to the Island nation in an Indian fishing boat. The Sri Lankan Navy in its official website claimed that SLNS Ranawickrama, a Fast Gun Boat attached to the Northern Naval Command, on patrol detected a suspicious movement crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line from Indian waters to Sri Lankan territorial waters in the wee hours. The suspected boat movement is continuously monitored by the patrolling ship. The apprehension was made on suspicious and unusual presence of the alleged fishermen on the small fishing dhow. The seized drug parcels, boat and alleged Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai harbour and were handed over to the Kankesanthurai police for further investigations. The value of the seized drug was estimated to be in crores, it said. Sri Lanka Navy has been continuously apprehending drug traffickers approaching to the Northern waters as alleged fishermen. During the period 2016 up to date, 19 Indian nationals have been taken into Sri Lankan custody on the charge of smuggling drugs into the Island nation and approximately 2,140 kg of Kerala Cannabis and 130 kg of drugs classified to be cocaine and heroin have been seized during raids carried out by Sri Lanka Navy, the website added.
