Lucknow: Polling for the seventh and last phase of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh started this morning on a smooth note amid elaborate security. Polling started in 40 assembly seats of Poorvanchal including the VVIP Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Varanasi constituency. With this now polling in all the 403 assembly seats would be completed except for Alapur in Amedknagar district where voting would be held tomorrow. In the seventh phase, 1.41 crore electorate, including 64.76 lakh women, can exercise their franchise in 14,458 polling booths. Among the electorate 2,42,414 are first time voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years. There are 535 aspirants in the fray for the last phase, including 47 women. An estimated 22 per cent have criminal backgrounds while 25 per cent are crorepatis. Varanasi Cantonment has 24 candidates and Kerakat seat in Jaunpur district just six. The Election Commission has made elaborate security, including deployment of more than 700 companies of Central forces along with over one lakh policemen.Polling in the last phase will be held in areas bordering the Naxalite prone regions of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar. State Chief Electoral Officer(CEO) T Venkatesh said here today that polling started on a smooth note except for some teething problems in the Electronic Voting Machines. In Varanasi and some other places, voters were seen reaching the booths well before 0700 hours to exercise their franchise.
