Ex MP acquitted in two-decade old shootout case in Allahabad

Lucknow, Jan 11 - A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court today acquitted former MP and Samajwadi Party leader Atiq Ahmed and one another in a gruesome killing of five people in Allahabad two decade back.

Atiq Ahmed and Khalik-ur-Rahman were let off due to lack of evidence in the shoot out while six other people were sentenced to life imprisonment in the case by special CBI Judge A K Singh here. Altogether 11 people including Atiq Ahmed were accused in the murders of which three died during the trial.

According to the incident on April 4, 1995, shoot out at the Allahabad civil court had claimed five lives including a noted criminal Akhtar.

The CBI court today sentenced life imprisonment to lawyers Maqsood Ahmed, Farukh Ahmed and Mustafa Hasan Farooqi along with Mujtaba Hasan Farooqui, Sagir and one another.

Atiq Ahmed, lawyer Khan Shaulat Hanif, told mediapersons here that Atiq had himself appealed in the high court for a CBI probe into the killing. But the surprisingly CBI had chargesheeted Atiq in the shootout.

Atiq too welcomed the decision of the trial court and claimed that the verdict has strengthen his faith on the judiciary.
