Emerald Lingam stolen from temple

Ayyappa Temple, Sabarimala

Chennai:  In a shocking incident, an emerald statue was found stolen from a 400-year-old Lord Siva Temple at Villalur near Tiruporur on the city outskirts last night. The incident came to light when the priest of the Suyambeeswarar temple found the front lock of the temple broken. The value of the statue was said to be estimated at Rs two crore. Police said, a local resident, Mohan, usually guarded the temple, but he left the place yesterday due to heavy rain. Cashing on this, the burglars gained entry into the temple, used a chemical solution to remove the Emerald Lingam (statue) and decamped with it. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
