Congress trying to present Prez Polls as theoretical rivalry: Venkaiah Naidu

Gandhinagar:  Union Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu today slammed the Congress for politicising the upcoming Presidential elections and said the Opposition is trying to present it as a theoretical rivalry before the nation. Talking to mediapersons after the commencement of the three-day long Textile India 2017 exhibition, Mr Naidu said the efficiency, background and commitment with the Constitution is the main criteria for the selection of a candidate for the presidential polls, however, it is unfortunate that the Congress is giving it a colour of theoretical rivalry before the entire nation. “I want to ask the Congress what type of theoretical rivalry is this? Is enforcing democracy, applying sensorship on media, forcing people to do family planning, putting the Opposition behind bars and amending the Constitution is your (Congress’) theory ? ” the Union Minister stated. “Don’t unnecessarily try to make the it (Presidential Polls) a joke before the country,” said Mr Naidu. He further clarified that this fight was not on the basis of caste but on the basis of capacity, calibre, conduct and commitment and based on these criteria several non-NDA parties are also supporting their candidate Ram Nath Kovind. “I am fully assured that because of the capacity and calibre of our candidate, non-NDA parties like JD(U), BJD, AIADMK, TRS, YSR Congress and Indian National Lok Dal are also supporting our candidate and we are definitely going to win,” claimed the Minister. Further, taking a dig at the Opposition, which was reportedly a divided house on the eve of a meeting of their leaders to take a call on whether they should field a joint candidate against NDA candidate, Mr Kovind a few days back, Mr Naidu said,”We are united, they (opposition) are divided.” The Presidential Election 2017 is scheduled to be held on July 17 while the counting of votes will take place on July 20 as President Pranab Mukherjee’s term comes to an end on July 24. While Mr Kovind is NDA’s candidate, the Congress-led Opposition has fielded former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as their nominee.
