UP assembly concerned on threat of floods in eastern UP

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Assembly today expressed concern over the threat looming large on the people of several districts due to floods and asked the Yogi Adityanath government to take the matter seriously. The Opposition members also demanded for a special discussion over the floods and appealed to the government to step up its relief and rescue operations in the flood affected 23 districts in eastern UP. The Chief Minister in his intervention during Question Hour said all District Magistrates have been directed to work round the clock to prevent floods in their areas while the people residing between the river and embankments should be removed. He said the government was also concerned about the issue and was doing everything to safeguard the lives and the properties of the people. The issue of floods was raised during Question Hour and even in Zero Hour as well, with Leader of the Opposition Ram Govind Choudhury along with other members demanding a reply from the government and even asking Speaker Hridya Narain Dikshit for a special debate on the matter. Mr Choudhury said the lives of the people residing between the swelling rivers and the embankments are on threat. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said already Rs 255 crore have been earmarked for the flood prevention projects while the districts have been given free hands to drawn funds from the contingency fund during the need of any emergency. "There is no paucity of funds and people in the low lying areas prone to floods have been shifted to safer places," he informed the house. Earlier, during a question on floods raised by Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lalu, Minister of State for Irrigation Ms Swati Singh said Rs 85 crore have been spent on the flood protection projects. She said of the total 189 projects of floods, 17 new projects have been taken care off this time. She added that all repair works on flood prevention have been completed and even assured that the breaches in the Elgin bridge have also been repaired. However, another Irrigation Minister Dharampal Singh claimed that all rivers in the state were flowing below the danger level except Sharda at Lakhimpur Kheri. But Mr Lalu alleged that 32 villages in Barabanki was submerged due to breach in the Elgin Bridge and of the total 40 flood affected villages, the situation in 23 districts are concerning. However, later the Congress members staged a walkout when they were not satisfied with government's queries.
