Dawn to dusk Tripura bandh evokes mixed response

Agartala: Congress sponsored dawn to dusk general strike in Tripura protesting 10 days long national highway and rail blockade of Indigenous Peoples' Front of Twipra (IPFT) seeking separate Twipraland and mute role the Left Front government over the crisis began peacefully with mixed response today. Business establishments and educational institutions are remained close while vehicles, including tri-cycle rickshaw and auto stayed off the road responding to the strike. The CPI-M affiliated motor workers have also joined the strike, which made the congress protest nearly successful. The government offices, including civil secretariat, could function with skeleton staff. Most of the ministers and top officials attended the office despite little picketing of the congress supporters. However, extra security deployment has been made across the state. Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Birajit Sinha alleged that both the state and the central governments were responsible for the land lock situation of Tripura and said, "Tribals have been deprived of their basic amenities in 25 years of the Left Front rule, which insisted them to raise the voice for separate state today and BJP is fueling it by conspiring to hold the blockade." He however, pointed out that empowerment of ADC has been a long pending demand of tribal parties but due to negative attitude of the Left Front government since 1993 now development index of ADC and tribal people in Tripura further deteriorated. The large scale corruption in tribal areas and not providing legitimate autonomy to ADC, tribals are now demanding separate state. "Congress doesn't support the demand of separate state but always favours for more autonomy and equal development across the state. It is fact; the Left Front government did not ensure the expected development of tribals that triggered sense of alienation among a section of tribes. N C Debbarma like leaders are exploiting the innocent sentiment of the tribal for most unrealistic demand," Sinha stated. The tribals of Tripura still died of malaria, snake bite, malnutrition and deprive of drinking water, sanitation, health and education due to anti-tribal stand of leftists; he alleged adding that tribal mothers are selling out their children out of poverty but the state government yet to take any action to stop such incidences. The BJP also exploiting the sentiment of tribals and hatching conspiracy to create an unrest between tribal and non-tribal by abetting and instigating N C Debbarma faction of IPFT to go for indefinite rail and road blockade from July 10 last, he alleged further. The central government most undemocratically denied the proposal of dialogue with the agitation group of IPFT, which further complicated the situation. The state government turned a mute spectator in the situation for past ten days where congress was compelled to call the strike today, Mr Sinha added. Mr Sinha alleged that the BJP led NDA government at Delhi was involved in hatching conspiracies to divide people on ethnic lines across the country. "They have won elections from Darjeeling supporting demands of Gorkhaland. Today, entire Darjeeling Hills are burning with unrest. BJP has got similar tactics in mind behind their clandestine support for Tipraland", Mr Sinha complained.
