Left parties protest against GST

Puducherry: The Left parties and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) here today held a demonstration in front of the 'Amudasurabhi' on the Gandhi road against implementation of Goods and Service Tax(GST). The parties maintained that of 18,000 traders here, only 3000 are doing business for more than Rs 1.5 crore and the others are being forced into the GST regime. In case of one tax throughout the country, the business in Puducherry will suffer affecting the traders and hence, an exemption as given to the eleven states be considered for Puducherry, the left leaders said. Further, treating Puducherry as a state is a violation of the Indo-French agreement, they added. CPI state secretary R Viswanathan, CPM secretary R Rajangam and VCK leader Devapozhilan among others participated in the agitation.
