SL Navy detains 7 Indian fishermen, 2 fishing trawlers

Ramanathapuram: Sri Lankan maritime forces detained seven Indian fishermen, confiscated two mechanised fishing trawlers and attacked several Indian fishing trawlers, while they were fishing on the high seas at mid night last night. State fisheries officials quoting a communiqué from Lanka told newsmen here this morning that two fast attack crafts belonging to the Northern Naval Command of the Island nation arrested seven fishermen, hailing from Mandapam coastal hamlet in Ramanathapuram and detained their two fishing trawlers. The fishermen were allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters about 12.5 nautical miles and 9.5 nautical miles North-West off Delft Island. The incarcerated fishermen, along with the boats and fishing gears, were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Jaffna for onward legal action. Meanwhile, the fishermen who returned to Mandapam coast alleged that the Sri Lankan naval personnel attacked several fishing trawlers, destroyed the fishing nets and chased them away at gun point.
