Heavy downpour lashes Kolkata, more rainfall expected in next 24 hours

Kolkata: Heavy downpour lashed the city and its outskirts, causing traffic snarls at important junctures. Traffic slowed down in major parts of the city due to waterlogging. The city recorded an average rainfall of 50 mm during an hour's span. Stretches including the Muktaram Babu Street, Central Avenue, MG Road, Amherst Street, Camac Street, Bhawanipore, Rashbehari Avenue, Chetlaa and Behala were waterlogged for hours after the downpour. Traffic crawled at these places till the water level receded. All drainage pumping stations operated by Kolkata Municipal Corporation were pressed into action. According to the IMD Kolkata Regional Centre, a depression over the Bay of Bengal was responsible for the hour-long downpour and it's likely to further cause moderate to heavy rainfall in the city and its surrounding areas in the next 24 hours. As per the Regional Meteorological Centre, cloudy skies and spells of rain and thundershowers will continue for the next 24 hours. "It is expected to rain heavily in the city and neighbouring areas for the next 24 hours," a Regional Meteorological Centre official said. "Most areas of South Bengal, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hoogly, and East Midnapore will also experience heavy rainfall," he added. Kolkata has been receiving good rains since the Southwest Monsoon made onset over the area. In fact, the last 24 hours were also not very different as the city recorded heavy rainfall. Few southern districts of West Bengal also saw moderate rains during the same time frame.
