Railway Ministry sanctions DEMU service for Tripura

Agartala, In order to improve internal connectivity between Southern and Northern towns of Tripura, the ministry of railways has announced the introduction of four pairs of Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rapid transit trains from September 1 next. Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in a letter to Chief Minister informed the decision Wednesday evening. According to the decision, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) will run three pairs of DEMU trains in Agartala – Belonia - Sabroom section in a day while one pair will move from Sabroom to Dharmanagar via Agartala. The narrow-gauge train service was launched in 2008 between Agartala and Dharmanagar, and after Modi led government came in power in 2014, the railway track was converted to broad gauge. Later, premier train services like Rajdhani and Humsafar express along with other super fast trains, connecting Agartala with Silchar, Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Kolkata, Deoghar, Bhubaneswar, Habiganj, Bangaluru and Delhi were introduced. However, over a decade after introducing the train service in Tripura, demand for DEMU service, to improve the internal mobility and boost trade and tourism, has been finally fulfilled. The NFR has already assessed all technical formalities and it was waiting for the sanction of the ministry. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said, "Three days ago, I reminded Piyush Goyal ji about the demand of introduction of DEMU for rapid transit and after two days, it has been done. Mr Goyal's quick action once again proves Prime Minister's commitment towards the development of Northeast."
