India advises Maldives Govt to release all political prisoners

New Delhi: India has once again advised the Maldivian Government to release the political prisoners and restore credibility of the electoral and political processes in the island nation. In a statement here on Wednesday Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep dismay over sentencing of previous president Gayoom and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed for long term without any "fair trail". "Since the beginning of the political crisis in the Maldives, India has repeatedly urged the Maldivian government to allow all institutions, including the Supreme Court and Parliament, to function in a free and independent manner, and to permit genuine political dialogue between all political parties," said the ministry.
