Opposition slams TN govt for concealing facts about Gutkha scam in HC, demands CBI probe

Chennai: Leaders of various Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, including the DMK and the PMK, today slammed the state government for concealing the letter written by the Income-Tax department on the multi-crore gutkha scam, in the Madras High Court. While DMK Working President and Opposition leader M K Stalin condemned it and demanded a CBI probe into the whole issue, PMK Founder Dr S Ramadoss wanted the Madurai Bench of the High Court to treat this (concealing the IT letter on gutkha scam) as a separate case and order a CBI probe. The sharp reaction from the Opposition leaders came a day after Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, on a petition filed in the High Court challenging the two-year extension given to DGP T K Rajendran despite his name figuring in the Gutkha scam, had stated that her office had not received any letter from the IT department, directing the government to take action against those involved in the scam.
In a statement here, Mr Stalin expressed shock over the Chief Secretary, a straight forward IAS officer having functioned in various departments for 36 years, concealing the IT letter in her affidavit filed in the court. ''It is a million dollar question as to how Ms Girija Vidyanathan accepted the promotion and extension of Mr Rajendran as DGP, who is to face an inuqiry in the gutkha scam case'', he said. ''It remained a 'mystery' as to how the Centre, which had filed a sworn affidavit in the Supreme Court that it would not accept granting two years extension after his retirement, and the Union Public Service Commission, accepted the two-year extension given to Mr Rajendran on his retirement day'', he added.
