Cong rebuffs Govt claim of improvement in J&K situation

New Delhi: Repudiating the claim by the government of an improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress today called upon the Centre to take the nation into confidence about the real situation and disclose what it is doing to bring about normalcy in the state.. In a joint statement to reporters, senior Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Ghulam Nabi Azad said there was continuing violence in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. 'Almost everyday, soldiers are being killed, common people are dying and hundreds are being injured. So, the government is misleading the people of the country by claiming that there has been an improvement in the situation,' they said. Mr Chidambaram alleged that the conditions in Jammu and Kashmir have deteriorated. Only last week , there have been some major incidents of violence. 'Since July 10, casualties have been reported every day from Jammu and Kashmir. Eight pilgrims, six jawans and one child have been killed until July 18. Besides there have been many incidents of clashes between civilians and the security forces and numerous people have been injured.. 'The government should inform people about the actual situation in the state. The entire country is concerned over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Therefore, people should be taken into confidence in this regard,' Mr Chidambaram said. Addressing reporters, Mr Azad said 'the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has deteriorated. On Tuesday, several school children had to face a scary situation on the Line of Control. Their vehicle was targetted. 'Yet the government claims that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved. Such a claim defies belief and common sense. The statement made by the Government yesterday is wrong, misleading and clearly at variance with the situation on the ground. 'The Congress repudiates government's claim and calls upon the Centre to take the nation into confidence and disclose what it is doing to bring about normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir.' He charged the NDA government with failure to control the situation in the state.
