On poll eve, IT dept seize Rs 1.48 cr cash meant for bribing voters in Andipatti

Theni, Officials of the Income Tax department's Investigations Wing on Wednesday seized unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 1.48 crore from the premises of a functionary of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) party at Andipatti in Theni district of Tamil Nadu on the eve of polling. Andipatti is one of the Assembly segment coming under the Theni LoK Sabha constituency. In a statement here, B Murali Kumar, Director General IT (Investigation), Chennai said the officials' based on specific inputs, conducted the searches which commended on Tuesday night and ended at 0530 hrs on Wednesday.

The cash was neatly packed in 94 packets and envelops on which the ward number, number of voters and the amount Rs 300 per voter was written. All the wards mentioned in envelops were in Andipatti assembly constituency, where bypolls would be held tomorrow, along with the Lok Sabha polls. The seized unaccounted cash packed in envelops was meant to be distributed to voters. The premises where the cash was seized, belongs to a functionary of AMMK party and the party office was functioning in the ground floor. A sworn statement of the person present in the premises was recorded and in his confession he said Rs two crore in cash was brought in there for distribution to voters in Andipatti panchayat union area on April 16. A postal ballot paper for Andipatti assembly by-election, which was already marked for the AMMK candidate, was also found in the premises and was seized.
