Former cricketer Kirti Azad to join Congress on Feb 15



Likely to be fielded as Cong candidate in LS polls from Darbhanga

Patna, : Former cricketer Kirti Azad is all set to join the Congress. He is three terms BJP member of Lok Sabha from Darbhanga constituency.

Azad will join the Congress party on February 15 in New Delhi in presence of the AICC president Rahul Gandhi, sources close to him said.

Kirti had started his political career as Congress MLA in Delhi assembly before coming to his home state. Poonam Azad, his wife too had contested the assembly elections in Delhi.

He may be fielded as Congress candidate in the Lok Sabha elections from Darbhanga.

Azad's father, Bhagwat Jha Azad was Chief Minister of Bihar and union minister under Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. He was AICC general secretary when Rajiv Gandhi was party president and Prime Minister.

Kirti Azad had complained that he had been humiliated by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi regularly. He was denied his place at officials functions of both state and Central governments in his constituency.

He alleged that the district officials of Darbhanga also harassed him on the instructions of the Chief Minister and deputy Chief Minister. His supporters were allegedly assaulted by the police as they protested denial of a chair for their MP on the dais at an official function.
