River, groundwater pollution: NGT directs UP to seal borewells and handpumps in 6 districts

New Delhi, National Green Tribunal on Thursday directed the state of Uttar Pradesh and its authorities concerned to seal all handpumps and borewells in the six districts of Western UP that were extracting mercury. Taking cognisance of a special committee' report constituted by the green court, today Principle Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarssh Goel, directed State of Uttar Pradesh and its authorities to seal all the handpumps and borewells which are extracting mercury in six districts of Western Uttar Pradesh, including Shamli, Baghpat, Ghaxiabaf, Meerut and Saharanpur. A special committee was set up by NGT to carry out a survey of the the rivers Hindon , Krishni and Kali and it was also directed to conduct and intensive survey of the industries situated in the said 6 districts of western UP. Appearing for the petition filed by Doaba Paryavaran Samiti, advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal, argued that due to alleged corruption Corruption in the Pollution Control Board, the poor children of the 6 districts were drinking mercury mixed water as the mercury was mixed in the water drawn from borewells amd handpumps due to pollution and led to serious health hazards like hepatitis b, cancer and others.
