Sensex closes at record 31,715.64 pts due to buying in Telecom & Technology stocks

Mumbai: The BSE Sensex soared today by 355.01 points to close at a record-high of 31,715.64 on the back of a rally in stocks like Technology, Telecom and Realty. During the day, the Sensex shot up by as much as 408 points to touch a new peak at 31,768, surpassing its previous milestone of 31,522 hit on June 22. The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) also achieved a new milestone at 9763.05, advancing by 97.25 points, even as the trading in cash and F&O segments remained shut for 3 hours in the morning due to a technical glitch. Trading resumed later at 1230 hrs. In the broader market, the S&P BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap were trading marginally lower than frontline indices, up 0.7 per cent and 0.4 pc respectively. The Sensex rose by 150 points to 31,510.62 in early trade and then remained firm throughout the day. Finally, it ended in green at 31,715.64, advancing by 355.01 points from its previous close. The Nifty recorded day's high and low at 9,772.20 and 9,646.45 points, respectively. Most sectoral indices posted decent gains. Surprisingly, IT majors also witnessed a sharp recovery and made significant contribution ahead of the earnings season. The sectoral indices like Realty, Industrials, Auto and Metal also supported the market sentiment. Scrips of Bharti Airtel was the star gainer, up by more than 5 per cent, followed by TCS and Wipro by more than 4 pc. The market breadth was positive on BSE, as 1,537 shares rose while 1,108 others fell and 165 were unchanged.
