Puducherry: Allaying fears of the members on the quality of food being supplied to the students as part of noon-meal scheme and the job security to the government employees already engaged in it, Education minister Kamalakannan told the assembly on Friday that the 'Akshaya Patra Foundation', with which the government had signed an MoU to provide noon meal is a voluntary organization and functioning on a non-profit basis. Replying to a special mention tabled by AIADMK member A Anbazhagan during zero hour, the Minister said the foundation is supplying quality noon meal to 17 lakh students in 12 states and the MoU was signed after ascertaining that the system of noon meal supply would be improved.
Further the exchequer could save Rs 2 crore to Rs 3 crore annually, Mr Kamalakannan said, adding that the government would ensure job security to the employees who were already engaged by the administration. He said the foundation would provide training to the employees and engage them. They will also modernize the Central kitchen here at a cost of Rs 13 crore, he added.
