Barring Geelani, Shabir all separatist leaders released in Kashmir

117120194Srinagar, Aug 1 -Barring chairman of the hardline Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chief Shabir Ahmad Shah, all separatist leaders, who were put under house arrest or taken into preventive custody have been released. There was no relief for Mr Geelani who remained under house arrest a day after his return from New Delhi on April 15. Barring two occasions, the amalgam chairman remained under house arrest, a spokesperson of the hurriyat Aiyaz Akbar said. However, he said he himself, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrayee and two other amalgam leaders, who were also put under house arrest on Thursday evening were released last night. Mr Akbar Mr Geelani was not allowed to offer any Friday or Eid prayers in a mosque. Yesterday, hurriyat activists organised demonstration in respective areas to express solidarity with the Muslims of Jammu, who are allegedly facing discrimination since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government assumed office in the state. Mr Shah also remained under house arrest for the past about one month, he alleged. He said he was not even allowed to go out during the month of holy Ramdan. "I was not allowed to offer Eid prayers in a mosque," he alleged. However, about a dozen leaders of moderate HC, including media advisor Advocate Shahidul Islam, who were taken into custody yesterday during demonstrations in civil lines, were released last night. Advocate Islam said they were arrested when they were holding a peaceful demonstrations, demanding release of all detenues and capital punishment. However, "last night, we were released from police station Kothibagh."
