Barnala: Expressing empathy with farmers waiting at the Barnala Mandi (grain market) for their payments for the past two weeks, Barnala MLA and Vice-President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Kewal Singh Dhillon has lashed out at the Akali Government for betraying the farmers of the state. ''The Badal Government has failed to deliver on its promise to pay the farmers within 48 hours of procurement,'' said Mr Dhillon, on a visit to the Mandi in Barnala yesterday. Mr Dhillon expressed extreme displeasure over the tardy lifting of the paddy, saying that it was shameful that the Akali Government has repeatedly failed to protect the interests of the farmers. "Farmers are facing a harrowing time on account of the slow pace of procurement and delay in payment, and are compelled to spend nights in the grain market. Absence of proper drinking water arrangements and toilets have further added to their woes," rued the Congress MLA. Mr Dhillon interacted with several farmers and arhtiyas at the grain market. While sharing their problems, arhtiyas Iqbal and Ashok Kumar told Dhillon that one of the main problems they were facing was delay in the payments. The government had not released a single payment after October 15, they complained. Recalling that all procurement was completed within 24 hours, followed by prompt payment, during the tenure of Captain Amarinder Singh, Mr Dhillon assured the farmers and arhtiyas that things would again be good for them once the Congress is back in power early next year.
