Kanpur Dehat,UP: At least two passengers were killed and 28 passengers injured, some of them critically when 15 coaches of 12987 Sealdah -Ajmer express derailed between Rura and Metha stations on the busy Howrah-Delhi trunk route in this district today. Dense fog in the area could be one of the reason for the accident. The section on which the accident occurred was a modified automatic signalling system. Inspector General of Police (Kanpur zone ) Zaki Ahmed has confirmed the number of casualties. Both the passengers died at Kanpur hospital during treatment. Talking to UNI, UP DGP Javed Ahmed said 24 people were injured and the rescue operation is underway. He also said that teams of the NDRF have been rushed to the accident spot. However, eye witness claimed that more that 50 people were injured in the mishap. Police Superintendent (SP) Kanpur Dehat Prabhakar Choudhury too was camping on the accident spot. Ambulances have been rushed to ferry the injured to hospitals in Kanpur. Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena told UNI here that the accident occurred around 50 kms away from Kanpur central station at around 0520 hrs. As per preliminary reports 15 coaches of the train got derailed. The first five and last three coaches were intact while rest got derailed which includes two general coaches and 13 sleeper class. "People are being sent to their destinations by buses and other trains. Reason of derailment was not known immediately but there was dense fog in the area. Also the train was moving on Automated section," he added. Relief trains have been rushed from Kanpur, Etawah, Tundla and Allahabad. However CPRO, North Central railway, situated in Allahabad Vijay Kumar said that due to the accident, several trains on the busy Kanpur-Delhi route have been detained at different stations. Surprisingly, this is the second rail accident in the district. On November 20, the Indore-Patna express derailed near Powaya station on Kanpur-Jhansi route in which more that 130 passengers were killed.
