New Delhi: The 10th edition of the Hero I League football Championship will kick off from January 7, which will witness the inclusion of two new teams -- Punjab and Chennai.
Inaugurating the upcoming edition of the tournament, AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said,"The 10th season will witness the representation of teams from all the four parts of the country.
Punjab is making a comeback in the league after five seasons and with this, the northern part of country will also be represented.
" The six month long tournament will be kicking off from January 7 in Bengaluru where the last champion Bengaluru FC will take on Shillong Lajong FC.
Star footballers like Sunil Chhetri, India's best footballer of 2016 Jeje Lalpekhlua and Subrata Paul, which would help in the increasing the popularity of the league.
Moreover, new team Minerva Punjab will further help in the promotion of the game in the northern part of the nation.
"Two new team are been included in the league and with the comeback of Punjab FC, football will return back to state while Chennai will be a completely new team.
I league is top priority for us as this tournament provides players for the country who go on to international level," he said.
He further said that the earlier season of the league comprised of 14 teams and the games were held in six or seven venues however, the next edition will be played in ten different cities.
"Mohun Bagan and East Bengal will play their matches at different venues and 90 matches of the season will be aired live," added he.
Terming the year 2016 as a milestone for Indian football, AIFF General Secretary said the national football team reached to its best ranking in lst six year.
He also said that the Indian football is marching towards a new height after Bengaluru FC entered the finals of the AFC finals.
